Tiny rivers can surprise!
Before moving on to my next voluntary job I met with Miles Rushmer, whom I contacted in regard of the rainbow trout strains and their behaviour in that part of NZL. Miles lives in Mt. Manganui next to Tauranga from where he guides on about 25 rivers within 1h drive time from his home. He is known for successfully guiding for 5-10kg brown trout which run into small tributaries of Lake Rotorua.
Miles suggested to fish together and check some of the little rivers nearby which he had not fished for a while. We met in the morning and discussed what to do as it was raining a bit and the conditions for sight fishing were not good at all and the rain might have put some fish down, too. But as Miles knows the rivers and streams better than anybody else in the area we soon got some nice fish despite of the bad conditions. I was very astonished to find such decent fish in tiniest streams. We caught them on dries and on the Kiwi tandem(dryfly and little nymph). It was a pleasure to fish with Miles and we enjoyed very much talking about trout behaviour in NZL waters.
BTW: The best time for getting your personal best with Miles is in NZL winter which means April/May. So contact Miles if you want to hit a big one.
