The Sava Bohinjka
Sava Bohinjka is the probably most popular fly fishing water in Slovenia. This is also due to the huchos which are quite common and can be observed on a daily basis. Catching them is difficult but compared to other Huchen rivers on the foothills of the Alps fly fishing for Huchen at Sava is comparatively easy especially if you are accompanied by a local.
The Sava Bohinjka arises from the lake Bohinjsko Jezero. The water level of the Sava corresponds with the state of the lake. Except after heavy rainfalls which colour some tributaries the Sava Bohinjka is usually always crystal clear and offers best conditions for excellent fly fishing. Graylings, brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout and Danube Salmon (Hucho hucho) can be caught there. The Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinjka are considered the best hucho waters of Slovenia. Nevertheless, for fishing huchos you need a special licence and a guide or you have to be at least accompanied by another fly fisherman depending on the beat you intend to fish.
Hucho fishing is not easy in this river because of the clear water and the heavy fishing pressure. However, for trout and grayling fishermen the Sava Bohinjka is well worth the trip, too.
